The 6th grade is wrapping up our study of maps with a project about map projections. We've already discussed the reasons why flat maps cannot perfectly represent our round world, and now we're thinking about how maps can influence the way we think about the world. How can maps influence our thinking? I'll allow this clip from The West Wing explain: I want students to consider how they would think differently if this were the only map they saw of the world: This map is distorted by size based on population. Would we think differently if this was how our maps looked: For this project, students will be researching a topic of their choice and creating a map projection distorted based on that topic. Students will then write a short essay explaining their map. The project will be due October 25. Please find the project description and rubric below, and please contact me with any questions!
